On-Page SEOTechnical SEOChecklist
On-page SEO is the foundation of every high-ranking website. Before you publish any page — whether it's a blog post, service page or landing page — run through this 25-point checklist. It takes less than 15 minutes and can make the difference between ranking on page 1 or page 5.
Section 1: Keyword Targeting (5 Points)
- Primary keyword identified — every page targets one main keyword with clear search intent.
- Keyword in title tag — your primary keyword appears near the beginning of the title tag.
- Keyword in URL slug — the URL is short, readable and contains the primary keyword (e.g. /local-seo-guide-kenya).
- Keyword in H1 — the H1 heading (there should be only one per page) contains the primary keyword naturally.
- Keyword in first 100 words — the primary keyword appears in the opening paragraph.
Section 2: Title Tags and Meta Descriptions (4 Points)
- Title tag length — between 50–60 characters. Google truncates anything longer in search results.
- Unique title tag — no two pages on your site share the same title.
- Meta description written — 150–160 characters, includes primary keyword and a clear reason to click.
- No duplicate meta descriptions — every page has a unique meta description.
Section 3: Headings and Content Structure (4 Points)
- One H1 only — each page has exactly one H1 tag.
- Logical heading hierarchy — H2s for main sections, H3s for sub-sections. No skipping levels.
- Content length appropriate — informational pages should be 1,000+ words; commercial pages 500+ words. Match or exceed the top-ranking competitor.
- LSI keywords used — related terms and synonyms appear naturally throughout the content.
Section 4: Images (3 Points)
- Descriptive file names — images are named with keywords, not "IMG_4821.jpg". Example: "nairobi-seo-agency.jpg".
- Alt text on every image — every image has descriptive alt text that includes the keyword where natural.
- Images compressed — all images are under 200KB. Use WebP format where possible.
Section 5: Links (4 Points)
- Internal links added — at least 2–3 internal links pointing to relevant pages on your site.
- Anchor text is descriptive — no "click here" or "read more". Use keyword-rich anchor text like "local SEO services in Nairobi".
- External links open in new tab — any link leaving your site has target="_blank" and rel="noopener".
- No broken links — all internal and external links have been checked and are working.
Section 6: Technical On-Page (5 Points)
- Page loads under 3 seconds — test with Google PageSpeed Insights. A slow page loses rankings and visitors.
- Mobile responsive — the page looks and functions perfectly on a smartphone.
- Schema markup added — use appropriate schema (Article, LocalBusiness, FAQ, Product) to help Google understand the page.
- Canonical tag set — the canonical tag points to the preferred version of the URL.
- Page indexed — the page is not accidentally blocked by a noindex tag or robots.txt rule.
